予期
よき · yoki · JLPT N3 · noun
expectation
🔮 予期 = beforehand (予) + appointed time (期): what you expect ahead of time
予 means in advance, as in 予約 (reservation) and 予定 (plan). 期 means a set time or period, as in 期間 (term). Put together, 予期 is what you count on before the time arrives: an expectation or forecast.
期 — 其 (phonetic) + 月 (moon/time)
期 is a phono-semantic compound. The right side 月 (moon) signals meaning, since lunar cycles marked fixed time periods in ancient China. The left side 其 supplies the sound. Together it points to a set time, period, or appointed date — meanings still carried today in words like 期间 and 日期.
