久しぶり

ひさしぶり · hisashiburi · JLPT N4 · na-adj

it has been a long time

⏳ 久しい (hisashii, long time) + ぶり (buri, after an interval of)

久 means long-lasting, as in 永久 (eternal). ぶり attaches to a time span to mean the first time since then: 三年ぶり = first time in three years. So 久しぶり is literally after a long while, said as a greeting like long time no see.

久 — person 人 with a stroke marking the back
Originally a pictograph showing a person from behind with a mark indicating moxibustion treatment applied to the back, the original sense of 'cauterize' (now written 灸). It was borrowed phonetically to mean 'long time' or 'enduring,' which became its standard meaning.
