不運
ふうん · fuun · JLPT N2 · noun
bad luck
🐈⬛ 不 (not) + 運 (luck) = not-luck, so bad luck
不 is the negation prefix, as in 不安 (uneasy). 運 is luck, the same character in 幸運 (good luck). Put 不 in front and the meaning flips to bad luck.
不 — single pictograph; bird flying upward
Originally a pictograph in oracle bone script, traditionally interpreted as a bird flying up toward the sky and unable to come down, suggesting negation or refusal. Over time it became the standard negation word in Chinese, used before verbs and adjectives to mean 'not'.
