下車

げしゃ · gesha · JLPT N2 · noun

getting off

🚌 下 (down) + 車 (vehicle): you go down from the vehicle when getting off, as in 下車 = get off a bus or train

下 means down or descend, and 車 means vehicle or car. Put together they describe stepping down out of a bus, train, or taxi when you reach your stop.

下 — horizontal line 一 + mark below
下 is an indicative character: a long horizontal line represents a reference level, and a shorter stroke placed beneath it points to the area below. The original meaning 'below, down' comes directly from this spatial diagram, and it later extended to verbs like 'descend' and 'lower'.
