下りる
おりる · oriru · JLPT N4 · verb-ichidan
to get down
🚌 下 = down + りる: oriru, oh-REE-ru, off the bus you go
下 is the kanji for down or below, so 下りる is literally to do down. Same kanji as 下 (shita, under) and 下がる (sagaru, to drop). Also written 降りる when getting off a bus or train.
下 — horizontal line 一 + mark below
下 is an indicative character: a long horizontal line represents a reference level, and a shorter stroke placed beneath it points to the area below. The original meaning 'below, down' comes directly from this spatial diagram, and it later extended to verbs like 'descend' and 'lower'.
