一面
いちめん · ichimen · JLPT N1 · noun
side
🪙 一 = one + 面 = face/side: 一面 is one side, like one face of a coin
面 means face or surface, as in 正面 (front side). So 一面 literally means one face or one side of a flat thing, such as a coin.
一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'
面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
