一時

いちじ · ichiji · JLPT N3 · noun

time

⏳ 一時 = one + time: just one stretch of time, then it's over

一 means one and 時 means time or hour. A single block of time is a temporary one, so 一時 means for a while or temporarily, as in 一時停止 (pause, a stop for one moment).

一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'
