一旦

いったん · ittan · JLPT N2 · adverb

once

🌅 一旦 = one + dawn: one sunrise, so once, or just for now

旦 is the sun 日 sitting on the horizon line 一, meaning dawn. One dawn came to mean once, or a short while. In Japanese, いったん often means for now or temporarily, as in いったん休む, take a break for now.

一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'
