一応

いちおう · ichiou · JLPT N2 · noun

for the time being

一応 = one + response: a single pass, good enough for now

It was first written 一往, meaning to go once: one pass through, not the final word. So 一応 says something holds for the time being, or that you did it just in case, like 一応確認する, I'll check just to be sure.

一 — single horizontal stroke
一 is one of the simplest pictographs in Chinese, depicting a single horizontal line to represent the number one. It has retained essentially the same form since oracle bone script over 3,000 years ago. By extension it also means 'first,' 'whole,' or 'same.'
