キロ; キログラム

キロ; キログラム · kiro; kiroguramu · JLPT N5 · noun

kilogram

⚖️ キロ = kilo, clipped from キログラム (kilo + gram), from Greek khilioi, thousand

A loanword via French kilogramme. Japanese adds vowels to fit its syllables: gram becomes gu-ra-mu, and kilo becomes ki-ro since there is no L sound. The short form キロ can also mean kilometre, so context decides.
