Sometimes written 略ぼ, from 略 abbreviate: a shortened, nearly-there amount
ほぼ is sometimes written with 略, the kanji in 省略 (omission) and 概略 (outline). An outline gives you the rough version, minus the details. So ほぼ終わった means it's almost done, with only the last bit left.
