ひどい

ひどい · hidoi · JLPT N4 · i-adj

terrible

sounds like he-DOY: he DOYed me over, how terrible and unfair

Etymology: ひどい comes from 非道 (hidō) = not + the way, meaning off the moral path. Add the adjective ending い and you get behaviour that is outrageous, cruel, or unfair; today it also covers anything awful, like bad weather or a bad grade.
