ない

ない · nai · JLPT N5 · i-adj

doesn't have

nai sounds like nigh-nothing: nai = not there, not any

ない is the plain negative of ある (to exist, to have). Say nai and hear English nay, the old word for no. It also ends every plain negative verb: 食べない = not eat, 行かない = not go. So nai always signals a no.
