とうとう

とうとう · toutou · JLPT N4 · adverb

finally

🏁 tou-tou: two toes over the line — finally, at last

The doubled sound tou + tou works like two slow steps: one toe, then the other toe, and you have finally arrived. It marks an outcome reached after a long wait, good or bad, as in toutou kita = it finally came.
