そんな (that kind of) + に (adverb marker) = to that extent, so much

そんな comes from それ (that, near the listener), and に turns it into an adverb. Same family as こんなに (this much) and あんなに (that much, over there). With a negative it means not that much: そんなに高くない = not so expensive.
