ご存じ
ごぞんじ · gozonji · JLPT N4 · noun
knowing
🧠 ご存じ = honorific go + 存じ (to know, humbly): your honoured knowing
ご is the polite prefix; 存じ comes from 存じる, the humble verb for know or think. Together they make the respectful way to say that someone else knows something, as in ご存じですか: do you know? The じ is sometimes written 知, borrowing the kanji for know.
存 — 才 (talent/sprout) + 子 (child)
Originally written with 才 (a sprout breaking ground) over 子 (child), suggesting a child being raised or kept alive. The character came to mean 'to exist, to remain, to preserve.' Modern uses like 存在 (exist) and 保存 (preserve) reflect this core sense of continued being.
