ごちそう

ごちそう · gochisou · JLPT N4 · noun

banquet

🍱🍶 go + chisou (馳走, running about): a host dashes around to gather a feast

Etymology: 馳走 means to gallop about. A host once rushed around collecting ingredients for guests, so the word came to mean the feast itself and the act of treating someone. Hence gochisousama: thanks for the running-around.
