お邪魔します

おじゃまします · ojamashimasu · JLPT N2 · expression

Excuse me for disturbing you

🚪 お邪魔 = o-jama (disturbance) + shimasu (I do); 'I'm about to make a disturbance' before entering someone's home

Said on entering someone's home or space. 邪魔 (jama) means obstruction or disturbance, so the phrase literally says 'I'm about to cause a disturbance'. The honorific お- prefix softens it.

邪 — 牙 (tooth/phonetic) + 阝 (right ear, 邑 city radical)
邪 is a phonosemantic compound. The right-side 阝 (from 邑, 'settlement') originally referred to a place name, while 牙 supplied the sound. Over time the place-name use faded and the character was borrowed for the abstract sense 'crooked, evil, heterodox,' which is now its main meaning.
