お見舞い
おみまい · omimai · JLPT N4 · noun
ailment
💐🏥 お見舞い = polite o + 見 see + 舞 go around: going round to see the sick
From the verb 見舞う (mimau), to call on someone and check how they are. 見 means see; 舞 once carried the sense of going around. The honorific お makes it the set term for a sick visit, and for the gift or card brought along.
舞 — dancer with tassels 無 + opposing feet 舛
舞 is a pictograph of a person dancing while holding ox-tail tassels or feathered streamers in both hands; the upper part 無 originally depicted the dancer with ornaments, and 舛 below shows two feet stepping in opposite directions. When 無 was borrowed to mean 'not/none,' 舛 was added to preserve the original 'dance' meaning.
