お弁当

おべんとう · obentou · JLPT N5 · noun

lunch

お弁当 — lunch

🍱 お弁当 = polite o + bentō, the boxed lunch English borrowed as bento

The お is the honorific prefix that softens everyday nouns, as in お茶 (tea). 弁当 is the same word English took as bento, so you already know it. Say o-ben-tō with a long final o.

当 — small ⺌ + crown 冖 + hand 彐 (simplified from 當: 尚 + 田)
Originally written 當, combining 田 'field' with 尚 as a phonetic. The early sense was 'to match' or 'face' a field of equal value, extended to 'correspond to', 'ought to', and 'serve as'. The simplified form 当 streamlines the upper 尚 component.
