🍪 おやつ = 御 (polite o-) + 八つ (yatsu, the old 2 pm bell time for a snack break)
八つ (yatsu) was the Edo-era time bell for about 2 pm, when people took a break and ate. Adding the polite prefix 御 (o-) gave おやつ, the between-meal snack.
