仰る: the kanji means look up — words from someone you look up to
Use おっしゃる instead of いう when a superior or customer is the one speaking. Its kanji 仰 also appears in 仰ぐ, to look up to or revere. Note the irregular polite form: おっしゃいます, not おっしゃります.
