ika (how, as in ikani) + ga: the polite cousin of dou
Contracted from older ikani ka, built on the classical question stem ika- (how). The same stem gives ikani and ikanaru. Today it is the polite swap for dou: Ocha wa ikaga desu ka = How about some tea?
