あいにく
あいにく · ainiku · JLPT N3 · na-adj
unfortunately
☔ From old あやにく: ah + にくい (hateful), so roughly 'ah, how annoying'
あいにく comes from あやにく: the cry あや (ah!) plus にく, the root of 憎い (hateful). It is a polite 'sorry, but no', as in あいにくの雨 (rain, unfortunately) or あいにく満席です (sorry, we're fully booked).
