hot and numbing
🌶️ 麻 = numbing (also 'hemp') + 辣 = spicy/hot; the tongue-tingling Sichuan combo
麻 means numb (the pins-and-needles buzz Sichuan peppercorns give); 辣 means spicy-hot from chili. Together they name the signature málà flavor: a mouth that burns and goes numb at once.
麻 — shelter 广 + two 林 (hemp fibers)
Originally a pictograph of hemp fibers (林-like shape) being processed under a shelter (广), depicting the workshop where bast fibers were stripped and dried. The core meaning was 'hemp/cannabis plant,' later extended to 'numb' or 'tingling' from the sensation hemp can cause, and to 'rough' textures like hemp cloth.
辣 — 辛 (bitter/pungent) + 束 (bundle)
辣 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The 辛 component carries the meaning, since 辛 originally depicted a tattooing knife and came to mean sharp, bitter, or pungent sensations. The 束 component (a bundle) supplies the sound. Together they describe a sharp, hot, spicy taste.
