blood
🩸 鲜 fresh + 血 blood = fresh blood, the vivid red kind
鲜 means fresh or vivid, 血 means blood; together they name bright red blood from a wound rather than blood in the abstract. The 鲜 sound xiān is the same one in 新鲜 xīnxiān, fresh.
鲜 — fish 鱼 + sheep 羊
A compound of 鱼 (fish) and 羊 (sheep), originally referring to a type of fresh fish. The meaning broadened to 'fresh' in general, then extended to 'delicious' and 'rare' (read xiǎn). The fish+sheep pairing reflects two prized fresh foods in early Chinese cuisine.
血 — drop 丿 over dish 皿
Originally a pictograph of a sacrificial vessel (皿) with a drop of blood inside, marking the offering of blood in ancient rituals. The small stroke on top represents the blood itself. Over time it broadened from ritual blood to blood in general.
