🐎 驾 = 加 (add, jiā) + 马 (horse) → hitch a horse to harness and drive
The bottom is 马 (horse) and the top 加 gives the jià sound. Adding a horse to a cart is exactly harnessing and driving it; today 驾 also covers piloting and steering.
驾 — 加 (jiā, phonetic) + 馬 horse
A semantic-phonetic compound: 馬 'horse' gives the meaning (yoking horses to a vehicle), while 加 supplies the sound. Originally meant to harness horses to a chariot, then broadened to 'drive' a vehicle and, by extension, to pilot or operate.
