首相

shoǔ xiàng · HSK 6

prime minister (of Japan or UK etc)

👔🏛️ 首相 = head/chief + minister — the top minister of the nation

首 (shǒu) means head or first, the same 首 in 首都 (capital city). 相 (xiàng) means minister or chancellor. Together: the head minister, i.e. prime minister.

首 — hair 丷 over face 自 (eye + nose)
首 is a pictograph of a head, originally drawn with hair on top and a face below (containing the eye element 目). It meant 'head' literally, then extended to 'chief, leader, first' since the head is the topmost and foremost part of the body.
