饱和

bǎo hé · HSK 7

saturation

💧 bǎo hé = full + harmonious — so full everything is in balance

饱 means full or satiated (as in eating your fill), 和 means harmony or peace. Saturation is the point where something is so completely filled that it reaches equilibrium — nothing more can be absorbed.

饱 — food radical 饣 + wrap 包
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 饣 (food) signals the meaning, relating to eating, while 包 (bāo, 'wrap/bundle') gives the sound bǎo. The image suggests a stomach wrapped or filled with food, hence 'full, satiated.'

和 — grain 禾 (phonetic) + mouth 口
和 is a phono-semantic compound: 禾 (grain) gives the sound and 口 (mouth) hints at meaning, originally suggesting voices joining in agreement or song. From this it came to mean harmony, peace, and 'together with'. In Japanese it also became the native word for Japan itself.
