风

fēng · HSK 1

wind

💨 风 = 几 (table/frame) + 虫 (insect); old graph showed bugs born of wind

Ancient Chinese believed insects were generated by the wind, so the seal form enclosed 虫 (bug) inside a wind-frame. Modern 风 keeps the outer frame; the simplified inside is a stroke shorthand for that bug component.

风 — 几 (table) + 虫 (insect)
Originally written 鳳 (phoenix), later simplified. The traditional form 風 contains 虫 (insect), reflecting an old belief that wind brought insects or that creatures stirred with the wind. The modern simplified 风 keeps 几 as an outer frame around 㐅.
