to face

🧭 面 face + 向 direction = facing toward

Your face (面) sets the direction (向) you're oriented. Like a compass needle, 面向 means to turn toward or be geared in a particular direction. Used for both physical facing and abstract orientation (e.g. 面向未来 = geared toward the future).

面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'

向 — roof 宀 + mouth 口
Originally a pictograph of a house with a north-facing window, showing an opening in a wall under a roof. The early meaning was 'north window,' which extended to 'the direction something faces,' then broadly to 'toward' or 'direction.' The modern shape simplified the window into 口.
