face

面 (face) + 临 (approach) = to face/approach a situation

面 means face or surface; 临 means to approach or be on the verge of. Together 面临 literally means to face something approaching — used for confronting challenges, problems, or decisions that lie ahead.

面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'

临 — person 亻(臥 lying down) + goods 品
Originally a pictograph of a person bending over to look down at objects (品), depicting someone overseeing or inspecting from above. The meaning extended from 'looking down upon' to 'approaching,' 'arriving at,' and 'being present at' a place or event. Modern uses like 临时 (temporary) preserve the sense of being momentarily present.
