非凡

out of the ordinary
🌟 fei fan = not (非) ordinary (凡) — literally extraordinary
非 means not or non-, 凡 means ordinary or commonplace. Together they negate the mundane: not-ordinary, i.e. exceptional. The fei sound echoes 飞 (fly), as if talent soars above the common level.
非 — two opposing wings 羽-like form
Originally a pictograph showing two wings spread in opposite directions, symbolizing things facing away from each other. From this 'opposition' image came the meaning 'not' or 'wrong.' It is also used as a phonetic component in many characters like 排, 悲, and 罪.
凡 — 几 enclosing a dot 丶
凡 originally depicted a flat tray or sail-like surface, shown as a frame with a small mark inside. From the idea of a plain, common container, it shifted to mean 'ordinary' or 'all in general'. The modern shape keeps the simple frame but no longer resembles a tray.
