one disaster on top of another

❄️🧊 雪 snow + 上 on-top + 加 add + 霜 frost: piling frost onto snow

Literally adding frost to snow that is already there. The four characters stack cold on cold: a bad situation gets a second blow, like ground already frozen taking another freeze. Used when one setback lands right after another.

雪 — rain 雨 + hand 彐 (originally broom 帚)
Originally an ideograph showing rain 雨 above a hand holding a broom, suggesting snow as 'rain that can be swept.' Over time the broom element simplified to 彐. The character has always meant snow, with later extended senses like 'to wipe away' (as in 雪恥, to wipe out shame).

上 — horizontal line above a baseline
上 is an indicative character (指事): a short stroke placed above a longer reference line shows the concept of 'above' or 'up'. The earliest oracle-bone forms used two horizontal lines for this; the modern shape added a vertical stroke for clarity. The core meaning of 'upper, above, to ascend' has stayed stable for millennia.

加 — force 力 + mouth 口
加 is traditionally analyzed as a compound of 力 (strength) and 口 (mouth), suggesting boasting or exaggerating one's effort with words. From this it extended to the meaning 'to add' or 'increase'. Today it is used broadly for addition, both literal and figurative.

霜 — rain radical 雨 + xiāng 相 (phonetic)
霜 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The top 雨 ('rain') signals a weather phenomenon, while 相 below provides the sound, originally close to 'shuāng'. The character has meant 'frost' since early times, later extending to figurative senses like white hair or yearly cycles ('one frost' = one year).
