难道
nándào · HSK 3
Do you really mean to say that...
❓ 难 (difficult) + 道 (to say) — 'difficult to say' = surely?
难 means difficult/hard; 道 means way or to say. Together 难道 literally asks 'is it hard to say that...?' — a rhetorical opener meaning 'do you really mean...?' Often pairs with 吗 at the end.
难 — 又 (right hand) + 隹 (short-tailed bird)
Originally written with 堇 (clay) plus 隹 (bird), 難 depicted a rare bird and was borrowed to mean 'difficult.' The modern simplified form replaces the left side with 又 (hand). The phonetic role of the original left component gave the reading nán.
道 — 辶 (walk) + 首 (head)
Originally a compound of 辶 'walk/movement' and 首 'head', depicting a path one walks while looking ahead. The literal sense 'road, way' extended metaphorically to 'method, doctrine, the Way (Dao)'. This philosophical meaning became central in Daoist and Confucian thought.
