难处

nán chu · HSK 7

difficulty

😣 难处 = 难 difficult + 处 spot, a difficult spot, that is the trouble

难 means difficult or hard; 处 means a place, point, or spot. A difficult spot is exactly what trouble or a problem is. Note 处 takes the neutral tone chu here, not the full chù.

难 — 又 (right hand) + 隹 (short-tailed bird)
Originally written with 堇 (clay) plus 隹 (bird), 難 depicted a rare bird and was borrowed to mean 'difficult.' The modern simplified form replaces the left side with 又 (hand). The phonetic role of the original left component gave the reading nán.

处 — 夂 (foot) + 几 (low table/stool)
Originally depicted a person stopping (夂, an inverted foot) beside a stool (几), suggesting someone settling down in a place. From 'to dwell/stay' the meaning broadened to 'place, location' (chù) and 'to handle, deal with' (chǔ). The simplified form drops the older 虍 top found in 處.
