附和

fù hè · HSK 7

to go along with

🗣️👥 附 = attach + 和 = harmony; attach your voice to theirs in agreement

附 means to attach or append, 和 means harmony or to join with. Together: attach yourself to someone's view, echoing what they say. Often used negatively for sycophantic agreement without independent thought.

附 — 阝(mound) + 付 (fù, give/attach)
A semantic-phonetic compound: the 阝 'mound/hill' radical hints at meaning while 付 'fù' supplies the sound. Originally referred to a small mound or hill附属 to a larger one, which extended to the modern senses 'attach, append, be near'.

和 — grain 禾 (phonetic) + mouth 口
和 is a phono-semantic compound: 禾 (grain) gives the sound and 口 (mouth) hints at meaning, originally suggesting voices joining in agreement or song. From this it came to mean harmony, peace, and 'together with'. In Japanese it also became the native word for Japan itself.
