选项 — option

✅☑️ 选 choose + 项 item = the chosen item = an option

选 means to select or pick; 项 means an item or entry (as in a list). Together: the item you pick from a list — an option or choice. Note 项 here is xiàng, the same character used for items or entries on a form.

选 — 辶 walk + 巽 (xùn, phonetic)
选 combines the walking radical 辶 with 巽, which suggests the sound. The original sense relates to going through or passing by, extended to 'picking out' or 'choosing' from a group. The simplified form replaces the older 選.

项 — 工 (gōng, phonetic) + 頁/页 (head)
项 originally meant the nape or back of the neck, with 頁 (head) giving the meaning and 工 supplying the sound. Over time it broadened to mean 'item' or 'category,' as in 项目 (project/item), while the original neck sense survives in compounds like 颈项.
