Car

🚗 车 = vehicle + 上 = on/aboard; literally 'on the car'

车 (chē) means vehicle/car and 上 (shàng) means on top or aboard. Together 车上 means on/in the car. The 上 suffix often marks location on or inside something, like 桌上 (on the table).

车 — pictograph of a chariot/cart
车 is a pictograph originally drawn as a top-down view of a chariot, showing the axle, wheels, and carriage box. The ancient form 車 clearly depicted two wheels connected by an axle. It still means vehicle, cart, or car today.

上 — horizontal line above a baseline
上 is an indicative character (指事): a short stroke placed above a longer reference line shows the concept of 'above' or 'up'. The earliest oracle-bone forms used two horizontal lines for this; the modern shape added a vertical stroke for clarity. The core meaning of 'upper, above, to ascend' has stayed stable for millennia.
