躺平

tǎng píng · HSK 6

to opt out of hustle culture

🛋️ tǎng = lie down + píng = flat — literally lying flat, doing nothing

A protest phrase coined by Chinese youth rejecting the rat race. Instead of grinding for unaffordable housing and 996 work schedules, they choose to lie flat and do the bare minimum.

躺 — body radical 身 + 尚 (phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 身 (body) gives the meaning, since lying down involves the body, while 尚 on the right hints at the pronunciation. The character developed in later script stages to specifically denote reclining or lying flat.

平 — horizontal stroke 一 + 干 with two dots 八
平 originally depicted a balance or scale being level, suggesting evenness. The horizontal lines and symmetrical dots evoke a flat, balanced surface. Over time it extended from 'level/flat' to broader senses like 'calm,' 'peaceful,' and 'ordinary.'
