身上

shēn shang · HSK 1

on the body

👕 身 = body + 上 = on; literally 'on (one's) body'

身 means body/self and 上 means on/upon. Together 身上 points to what's carried on the person — money, keys, a smell — hence 'on the body' or 'at hand'.

身 — pictograph of a pregnant body
身 is a pictograph originally depicting a person with a swollen belly, representing a pregnant woman in profile. Over time the meaning broadened from 'pregnancy' or 'torso' to refer to the body in general, and by extension oneself or one's person.

上 — horizontal line above a baseline
上 is an indicative character (指事): a short stroke placed above a longer reference line shows the concept of 'above' or 'up'. The earliest oracle-bone forms used two horizontal lines for this; the modern shape added a vertical stroke for clarity. The core meaning of 'upper, above, to ascend' has stayed stable for millennia.
