to approve; to endorse
👍 赞 (praise) + 成 (become) = praise-into-being, i.e. endorse
赞 means praise or commend; 成 means become or accomplish. Together: to give praise that brings something into being — to endorse or approve. Often paired with 反对 (oppose) in voting contexts: 赞成票 = yes vote.
成 — 戊 (halberd/weapon) + 丁 (nail/man)
Originally a pictograph of a halberd or axe-like weapon, suggesting the act of completing a task by force. Over time it shifted from 'to subdue' to the broader meaning 'to accomplish' or 'to become'. The 丁 element inside also hints at the chéng sound.
