🙇 谦 (modest) + 逊 (to yield, defer) = a modest person who yields to others
Both characters already mean humble, so 谦逊 doubles down: 谦 is modesty and 逊 is yielding or deferring. Together they describe someone who plays down their own status. The xùn in 逊 also shows up in 逊色 (inferior), the sense of ranking oneself lower.
