🙏 谢 = 言 (speech) + 射 (shoot) — words shot out in gratitude
Doubling 谢谢 softens it into everyday thanks, like English 'thanks-thanks'. The 言 radical marks it as a speech act; 射 lends the phonetic xiè. Same character twice = warmer, more casual than a single 谢.
