misconceptions
🚧 误 mistake + 区 zone = a fenced-off zone of wrong thinking; a misconception
误 means error or to mislead; 区 means area, zone, or district. Together they mark a mental zone where wrong ideas cluster: a common misconception or the error of one's ways. 误 also shows up in 错误 (mistake).
误 — speech radical 讠 + 吴 wú (phonetic)
误 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 讠 (speech) hints at meaning—originally tied to mistaken or misleading words—while 吴 supplies the sound. Over time it broadened from verbal errors to any mistake, delay, or harm caused by error.
区 — enclosure 匚 + 品 (items)
Originally a pictograph of items (品) hidden inside a container (匚), meaning to store or conceal. The sense extended to a bounded space, then to an administrative district or area. As a surname read Ōu, it preserves the older 'hidden/enclosed' nuance.
