lecture
🎤 讲 = speak/lecture + 座 = seat → a seated talk, i.e. a lecture
讲 means to speak or explain (think 讲话 'speak'). 座 means seat or a measure for big fixed things. Together: a formal seated talk — a lecture or a professor's chair (cathedra).
讲 — speech radical 讠 + 井 (well)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The left side 讠 (simplified form of 言, 'speech') gives the meaning, indicating something spoken or explained. The right side 冓 (simplified to 井-like form) originally suggested interlocking structure and provided the sound. Together it means to speak, explain, or tell.
座 — 广 (shelter) + 坐 (to sit)
Originally written as 坐, meaning 'to sit' (two people 人人 sitting on the ground 土). The shelter radical 广 was added to specify the place where one sits — a seat, throne, or platform. 坐 remained the verb 'to sit,' while 座 became the noun 'seat.'
