to see what is right and act courageously
🛡️ 见 see + 义 right(eousness) + 勇 brave + 为 act = see what's right and act bravely
Four-character chain from the Analects: 见(see) what is 义(just), then be 勇(brave) enough to 为(act) on it. The order is the lesson — perceive the right thing first, then have the courage to do it.
见 — eye 目 over legs 儿 (人)
见 (traditional 見) is a pictograph of a person 儿 with a large eye 目 on top, emphasizing the act of seeing. The original meaning 'to see' broadened over time to include 'to meet,' 'to perceive,' and 'view/opinion.' The simplified form 见 keeps the same structure in cursive shorthand.
为 — simplified form of 為; from 爪 (claw/hand) over 象 (elephant)
The traditional form 為 originally depicted a hand leading an elephant, suggesting the act of doing or making work. Over time it generalized to mean 'to do, to act, for the sake of.' The simplified 为 preserves this 'do/for' meaning, with pronunciation shifting between wéi ('to be, to do') and wèi ('for, because of').
