袖手旁观

xiù shoǔ páng guān · HSK 7

to look on without lifting a finger

👀 袖 sleeve + 手 hand + 旁 side + 观 watch = hands tucked in sleeves, watching from the side

Literally hands stuffed in your sleeves while you stand off to one side and watch. The folded-up sleeves mean the hands do nothing, so it names a bystander who refuses to step in and help.

手 — pictograph of a hand with five fingers
手 is a pictograph showing an open hand with fingers and a wrist. Early bronze and oracle bone forms clearly depict five splayed fingers, which simplified over time into the modern shape. It keeps its original meaning of 'hand' and also serves as a radical in many characters related to hand actions.

旁 — top 立 + 方 (phonetic)
Originally a pictograph related to two sides flanking a central path or boundary marker. The modern form combines 立 on top with 方 below, where 方 also hints at the sound. Its core meaning shifted to 'side,' 'beside,' or 'lateral.'
