行使
xíngshǐ · HSK 7
to exercise (a right etc)
行使 = 行 do/carry-out + 使 use/employ — to put a right or power to use
Means to exercise or wield authority, a right, or power. 行 carries the sense of carrying out an action and 使 means to use or deploy, so together they mean putting a granted power into action.
行 — crossroads pictograph (left 彳 + right 亍)
行 originally pictured a four-way crossroads in oracle bone script, with two paths meeting. From 'road' it extended to 'walk, go, travel,' and then to 'a row, line' or 'business firm' (read háng). The two halves 彳 and 亍 are the split sides of that ancient crossroads.
使 — person radical 亻 + official 吏
Originally a phono-semantic compound: 亻 (person) gives the meaning and 吏 (official, also a phonetic clue) suggests the sound. The early sense was 'to send a person on a mission,' from which came 'envoy/messenger' and the broader meanings 'to use' and 'to cause/make.'
