🌱 苗头 = 苗 sprout + 头 head: the first shoot poking up signals what is coming

A 苗 is a young sprout or seedling and 头 marks the tip or head; together the earliest tip of a sprout stands for the first detectable signs of how a situation will develop.

苗 — grass radical 艹 + field 田
A pictographic-semantic compound showing young plants (艹) growing in a field (田), originally meaning 'seedling' or 'young sprout.' The meaning later extended to 'descendants' and became a surname, as well as the name for the Miao ethnic group.

头 — 页 (head/page) + 豆 (bean, phonetic)
The traditional form 頭 combines 頁 (xié), meaning 'head', with 豆 (dòu) as the phonetic component. 頁 itself originally depicted a person with an emphasized head. The simplified form 头 is a modern shorthand that replaces 豆+頁 with a simpler shape while keeping the same meaning of 'head' or 'top'.
